THE MEDICAL EDUCATION IN CLUJ (1776-1872)

7thNovember 1776– Empress Maria Theresa issued the decree by virtue of which she established the Faculty of Medicine in Cluj, the first medical school in Transylvania.

1811– the Karolina Public Hospital was founded.

1817– the Faculty of Medicine was given the name of Medical-Surgical Institute. It functioned within the Royal Lyceum, providing training for surgeons and midwives.

1850– the Medical-Surgical Institute became an independent institution, directly subordinated to the Government of the Great Principality of Transylvania.

 

 

FACULTY OF MEDICINE – „FRANZ JOSEPH” UNIVERSITY OF CLUJ (1872-1919)

The Complex of the University Clinics (beginning of the 20th century)

October 1872 – the Hungarian Royal University of Cluj was founded. The University had four faculties: Law and State Sciences; Medicine; Philosophy; Letters and History; Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

1881– King Franz Joseph accepted the University to bear his name.

1882-1903– the complex of the University Clinics was built totalizing 10,049 m² of constructions. These Clinics were envisioned as a group of pavilions.

1895– the Karolina Hospital was transformed into a University hospital.

1872-1919– more than 40.000 students studied at the University of Cluj, includingaround 2.635 Romanians.

 

FACULTY OF MEDICINE – „KING FERDINAND I” UNIVERSITY OF CLUJ (1919-1948)

Pasteur Institute

September 1919– in the context of the Unification of Transylvania with Romania, the University of Cluj was transformed into a Romanian institution (with four faculties: Law, Medicine, Sciences, Letters and Philosophy).

7th November 1919– Prof. Iuliu Hațieganu, the first dean of the Faculty of Medicine, inaugurated the courses of the romanian medical education.

1927- the University of Cluj was officially called „King Ferdinand I” University.

1934-following the restructuring of the pharmaceutical education, the pharmacy department of the Faculty of Medicine was transferred to Bucharest.

August-September– in compliance with the Vienna Award, the northern part of Transylvania was rendered to the Hungarian state. The University of Cluj was forced to take refuge in Sibiu (the Faculties of Letters and Philosophy, Law, Medicine) and Timișoara (Faculty of Sciences).

May-June 1945– the „King Ferdinand I” University of Cluj returned from Sibiu and Timişoara.

January 1948– the name of the „Romanian University turned from „King Ferdinand I” University into „Victor Babeş” University.

 

THE INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY OF CLUJ (1948-1989)

1948– following the education reform, the Faculty of Medicine was separated from the University and became an independent institute.

1949– The Faculties of Hygiene and Pediatrics were founded.

1955-1957-the Faculty of Hygiene was abolished; the Faculty of Pediatrics turned into a department.

1958– the Medical and Pharmaceutical Institute was given the name of Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy.

1948-1989– In this period were established more than 20 new disciplines that contributed to the prestige of the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy (e.g. Medical Polyclinics, Pediatric Neurology, Clinical Biochemistry, Immunology, Cell Biology, Cardiology etc.). Also, the following were built: the new pavilion of the Surgery Clinic III, the building housing the Professional Diseases, the Nephrology Clinic, the Recovery Hospital, two new teaching spaces for the Faculty of Pharmacy and another two for the Faculty of Dentistry. The building of the Infectious Diseases Hospital was also completed.

 

IULIU HAŢIEGANU” UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY CLUJ-NAPOCA

1990– The Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy of Cluj-Napoca was called „Iuliu Hațieganu” University of Medicine and Phramacy Cluj-Napoca.

1993- The first charter of the University was elaborated.

1997-2000- the lines of study in English and French were initiated

2010– the University was situated among the universities of advanced research and education.

2011– according to the new Education Law, 12 departments were organized which joined toghether the former chairs of the university.

2020- the President of Romania awarded the “Iuliu Hațieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy with the Order „The Sanitary Merit in the rank of Knight”.

2021– in the Times Higher Education international ranking, U.M.F. Cluj-Napoca was the only university of its kind in Romania listed among the best 1.000 universities in the world. Also, U.M.F. Cluj-Napoca was co-opted in the university consortium Neurotech EU, a network of excellence in neuroscience and neurotechnologies research.
