Information about the Discipline of Physiology
Physiology is the fundamental science that studies the mechanisms involved in maintaining the homeostasis of the internal environment, which makes it possible for the human organism to function as a unit. Knowledge of physiology enables understanding of the functional properties of the cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine, nervous, digestive, and muscular systems, as well as how they interact to ensure the unity of the organism.
Members of the discipline are involved in delivering lectures and practical classes for Year I and II students in Medicine and Dental Medicine, as well as in fundamental research.
The discipline also contributes courses to master’s programs in Psychosomatic Medicine and Cosmetology, as well as postgraduate courses concerning the role of oxidative stress and methods for its evaluation in various physiological and pathological conditions.
The main research directions focus on in vitro and in vivo studies (on animal models) of oxidative stress and inflammation in various pathologies, the biocompatibility of different synthetic products, nanomedicine, and neurosciences.
PhD Supervisors:
Prof. Dr. Simona Clichici
Doctoral research topics include: pro- and antitumoral mechanisms in melanoma; the role of inflammation in myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative syndromes; biomarkers in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea; iron homeostasis and its relationship with inflammation in cardiovascular diseases; cardiovascular risk factors and their relationship with the intestinal microbiome; evaluation of the protective role of nanomaterials in experimental models of liver fibrosis, diabetes mellitus, and atherosclerosis.
