“Orthodontics is a biological, medical and technical specialty that differs from general dentistry by its content, by its own investigation and treatment methods, by correlation with other biological, medical, technical or dental specialties and by its development perspectives” (P. Firu)
Its objective is the study of the growth and development of the dento maxillary and morpho-functional disorders, known as dento-maxillary anomalies.
Orthodontics and Dento-Facial Orthopedics, as a specialty of Dental Medicine, is necessary for all dentists, each having the obligation: to recognize a deviation from the normal development of the dento-maxillary apparatus, to recognize the etiological factors of dento-maxillary anomalies, to know and to apply prophylactic and interceptive measures, to refer the patient to the specialist in a timely manner in order to stop the unfavorable evolution and improve the prognosis of the case.
Especially in adults, orthodontic treatment is often a component of the complex, multidisciplinary patient approach, preceding and facilitating prosthetic, periodontal and surgical treatments.
