On the corner, opposite the Franciscan church, stood the Karolina Hospital<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>7<sup>th<\/sup>November 1776<\/strong>&#8211; Empress Maria Theresa issued the decree by virtue of which she established the Faculty of Medicine in Cluj, the first medical school in Transylvania.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1811<\/strong>&#8211; the Karolina Public Hospital was founded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1817<\/strong>&#8211; the Faculty of Medicine was given the name of Medical-Surgical Institute. It functioned within the Royal Lyceum, providing training for surgeons and midwives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1850<\/strong>&#8211; the Medical-Surgical Institute became an independent institution, directly subordinated to the Government of the Great Principality of Transylvania.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACULTY OF MEDICINE &#8211; \u201eFRANZ JOSEPH\u201d UNIVERSITY OF CLUJ (1872-1919)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6962\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6962 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-2-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-2-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-2-768x494.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-2.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Complex of the University Clinics (beginning of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>October 1872<\/strong> &#8211; the Hungarian Royal University of Cluj was founded. The University had four faculties: Law and State Sciences; Medicine; Philosophy; Letters and History; Mathematics and Natural Sciences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1881<\/strong>&#8211; King Franz Joseph accepted the University to bear his name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1882-1903<\/strong>&#8211; the complex of the University Clinics was built totalizing 10,049 m\u00b2 of constructions. These Clinics were envisioned as a group of pavilions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1895<\/strong>&#8211; the Karolina Hospital was transformed into a University hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACULTY OF MEDICINE \u2013 \u201eKING FERDINAND I\u201d UNIVERSITY OF CLUJ (1919-1948)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6963\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6963\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6963\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-3.jpg 769w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 0.8rem;\">Pasteur Institute<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>September 1919<\/strong>&#8211; in the context of the Unification of Transylvania with Romania, the University of Cluj was transformed into a Romanian institution (with four faculties: Law, Medicine, Sciences, Letters and Philosophy).<\/p>\n<p><strong>7th November 1919<\/strong>&#8211; Prof. Iuliu Ha\u021bieganu, the first dean of the Faculty of Medicine, inaugurated the courses of the romanian medical education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1927-<\/strong> the University of Cluj was officially called \u201eKing Ferdinand I\u201d University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1934-<\/strong>following the restructuring of the pharmaceutical education, the pharmacy department of the Faculty of Medicine was transferred to Bucharest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>August-September<\/strong>&#8211; in compliance with the Vienna Award, the northern part of Transylvania was rendered to the Hungarian state. The University of Cluj was forced to take refuge in Sibiu (the Faculties of Letters and Philosophy, Law, Medicine) and Timi\u0219oara (Faculty of Sciences).<\/p>\n<p><strong>May-June 1945<\/strong>&#8211; the \u201eKing Ferdinand I\u201d University of Cluj returned from Sibiu and Timi\u015foara.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 1948<\/strong>&#8211; the name of the \u201eRomanian University turned from \u201eKing Ferdinand I\u201d University into \u201eVictor Babe\u015f\u201d University.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>THE INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY OF CLUJ (1948-1989)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6964\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6964\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6964 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-4-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-4-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-4-768x487.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.umfcluj.ro\/uploads\/2021\/05\/foto-umf-cluj-4.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6964\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Amphitheatre of the Faculty of Pharmacy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1948<\/strong>&#8211; following the education reform, the Faculty of Medicine was separated from the University and became an independent institute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1949<\/strong>&#8211; The Faculties of Hygiene and Pediatrics were founded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1955-1957-<\/strong>the Faculty of Hygiene was abolished; the Faculty of Pediatrics turned into a department.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1958<\/strong>&#8211; the Medical and Pharmaceutical Institute was given the name of Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1948-1989<\/strong>&#8211; In this period were established more than 20 new disciplines that contributed to the prestige of the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy (e.g. Medical Polyclinics, Pediatric Neurology, Clinical Biochemistry, Immunology, Cell Biology, Cardiology etc.). Also, the following were built: the new pavilion of the Surgery Clinic III, the building housing the Professional Diseases, the Nephrology Clinic, the Recovery Hospital, two new teaching spaces for the Faculty of Pharmacy and another two for the Faculty of Dentistry. Marinescu street)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>1990<\/strong>&#8211; The Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy of Cluj-Napoca was called \u201eIuliu Ha\u021bieganu\u201d University of Medicine and Phramacy Cluj-Napoca.<\/p>\n<p>1993- The first charter of the University was elaborated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997-2000- <\/strong>the lines of study in English and French were initiated<\/p>\n<p><strong>2010<\/strong>&#8211; the University was situated among the universities of advanced research and education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2011<\/strong>&#8211; according to the new Education Law, 12 departments were organized which joined toghether the former chairs of the university.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2020-<\/strong> the President of Romania awarded the &#8220;Iuliu Ha\u021bieganu&#8221; University of Medicine and Pharmacy with the Order \u201eThe Sanitary Merit in the rank of Knight\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2021<\/strong>&#8211; in the Times Higher Education international ranking, U.M.F. Cluj-Napoca was the only university of its kind in Romania listed among the best 1.000 universities in the world. Also, U.M.F.
